HISD Votes to Close 12 Schools: Immediate Changes Announced
BREAKING: The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has just announced a pivotal decision to close or consolidate 12 schools by the end of the 2025–26 school year. This urgent move follows a unanimous 9-0 vote by the Board of Managers, addressing significant challenges such as declining enrollment and the financial burden of maintaining underutilized facilities.
The plan entails the closure of eight schools and the consolidation or co-location of four others. HISD officials stress that reallocating resources will enhance student opportunities and improve instructional quality, a critical need in the district’s ongoing educational reforms.
Parents are expressing urgent concerns regarding the safety of transportation, potential impacts on academic quality at receiving campuses, and the emotional toll of relocating students from their neighborhood schools. Superintendent Mike Miles has assured families that HISD will remain engaged throughout this transition process.
Transportation Plans: To assist families, HISD will initiate direct outreach this summer, including phone calls to discuss student placements, transportation options, and boundary changes. Teachers and staff at affected campuses will be informed of their reassignment options by April 17, 2025.
The closures include schools such as Alcott Elementary and Briscoe Elementary, transitioning students to nearby campuses with varying enrollment changes, such as the consolidation of Fleming Middle School into Leland YMCPA. The district cites a 53% enrollment drop at Gulfton Middle College High School, underscoring the urgency of their decision-making process.
HISD plans to open a request process for transportation in early May, with eligibility based on distance from new campuses and hazardous walking routes. For the next two school years, the district will offer direct bus services from closing schools to receiving schools for all interested students, irrespective of eligibility criteria.
As HISD moves forward with these significant changes, the impact on students, families, and educators remains a priority. The district promises continued dialogue to address concerns and ensure a smooth transition for all affected.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as HISD prepares for this major shift in its educational landscape.
