Google Launches Long-Awaited Feature to Change Gmail Addresses
UPDATE: Google has just announced a groundbreaking feature allowing users to change their Gmail addresses ending with @gmail.com. The change is expected to roll out gradually, with many users likely to access this new option by January 2024.
This development comes as a relief for countless users who have long wanted to update their email addresses without losing access to their accounts. A newly updated page on Google’s help center outlines this feature, which lets users retain the familiar @gmail.com domain while changing their email usernames.
The update was first reported by users in a “Google Pixel Hub” Telegram group, who discovered the changes on the Hindi-language version of the help page. The English version, however, has yet to reflect these updates, still stating, “If your account’s email address ends in @gmail.com, you usually can’t change it.”
According to Google, this feature will allow users who have outgrown their original email addresses or simply want a fresh start to switch to a new address without losing any associated data. Users will continue to receive emails sent to both their old and new addresses, ensuring a seamless transition.
In their updated support pages, Google states, “If your Google Account email address ends in @gmail.com, you may be able to change it to another address that ends in @gmail.com.” This change means users can sign in to popular Google services like Maps, YouTube, and Drive using either email address.
However, there are important limits to consider. After making the switch, users will be unable to create another new Gmail address for the same account for a period of 12 months.
For those in regions where the help page has been updated, eligibility checks can be performed by visiting myaccount.google.com/google-account-email. Users can navigate to “Personal information” and click on “Email,” then “Google Account email address.” If eligible, they will see a button labeled “Change Google Account email.”
This feature promises to be a game-changer for many users, allowing them to customize their online identities while maintaining their essential data. In an age where digital presence is critical, Google’s latest update highlights a responsive approach to user needs and preferences.
As this feature continues to roll out globally, users are encouraged to stay alert for updates and take advantage of this long-awaited option. The urgency of this announcement makes it a topic worth sharing, especially for those who have felt constrained by their old Gmail addresses. Stay tuned for more updates as Google expands this service to users worldwide.
