Google AI Overviews Improve, Leaving Past Mistakes Behind
UPDATE: Google AI Overviews are undergoing significant improvements, transforming how users interact with AI-generated content. With advancements taking place throughout 2025, the technology is now gaining traction among users who once criticized its accuracy.
Just last year, in 2024, a viral incident captured attention when Google’s AI suggested adding glue to pizza to keep cheese from sliding off. In an unprecedented move, journalist Katie Notopoulos took the suggestion seriously and created a bizarre “glue pizza,” raising eyebrows and sparking widespread discussion online.
Now, as the year comes to an end, Google’s AI has shown remarkable progress, leaving its early clumsiness behind. Notopoulos acknowledges the shift, stating, “I can see that Google’s AI Overviews, for as much as I goofed on them for being clumsy and bad, are having the last laugh.”
In May 2024, the launch of AI Overviews was met with skepticism, as users noted numerous inaccuracies in the responses. Many were frustrated with the absurd suggestions, prompting a wave of social media reactions. “You can’t lick a badger twice” became a popular example of the AI’s failures, illustrating its struggle to handle nonsensical queries.
However, recent updates indicate that Google’s AI is evolving. Notopoulos reports that both she and her editor now frequently utilize the AI Overviews instead of traditional search methods. This shift raises questions about the future of content creation and the role of human writers in an increasingly AI-driven landscape.
In an official statement, spokesperson Meghann Farnsworth explained, “When people do nonsensical or ‘false premise’ searches, our systems will try to find the most relevant results based on the limited web content available.” This highlights the ongoing challenge for AI to adapt and provide meaningful responses.
As 2025 progresses, users are experiencing more accurate AI-generated insights. When testing fake idioms, the AI has begun providing reasonable explanations, indicating a step towards enhanced comprehension. For example, a recent query about the phrase “you can’t tell a yak not to dance” yielded a response that acknowledged it as a playful expression rather than an established idiom.
This continual improvement is significant, as it suggests that AI Overviews may soon become a staple in everyday searches. As users adapt, they are also learning to craft queries that yield more relevant responses from AI.
The implications are profound. With AI Overviews becoming more effective, the potential for reduced reliance on traditional search results could reshape how content is consumed and produced online.
With these developments, the question remains: how will Google continue to refine its AI capabilities? As we move into 2026, users and experts alike will be watching closely to see how AI Overviews evolve further.
