FDA Approves Wegovy Pill: Affordable Needle-Free Weight Loss
URGENT UPDATE: The FDA has just approved a revolutionary pill version of Wegovy, providing a significant breakthrough for those seeking weight loss solutions. This needle-free option is set to launch in the U.S. in early January 2024, offering a more affordable alternative at just $149 per month.
The approval marks Wegovy as the first oral GLP-1 drug specifically designed for weight management, according to drugmaker Novo Nordisk. The new pill contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, as its injectable counterpart, ensuring comparable weight loss results. In a late-stage clinical trial, participants lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over approximately 64 weeks, similar to those using the injection.
“This approval gives patients a convenient, once-daily pill that can help them lose as much weight as the original Wegovy injection,” stated Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo Nordisk. The pill is intended for adults with obesity or those who are overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. It’s also approved for reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events, providing a dual benefit for eligible patients.
The 1.5 milligram starting dose will be available at pharmacies and select telehealth providers. This new pricing is a significant reduction compared to the injectable version, which is priced at approximately $1,350 monthly before insurance or discounts.
Despite the high costs, demand for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs has surged. A recent survey by health policy research group KFF found that around 12% of American adults are currently using a GLP-1 drug for weight loss or chronic condition management, representing a notable increase from previous years. However, affordability remains a concern, with about half of users reporting difficulty in covering costs, even with insurance.
As patients await the arrival of this new option, Novo Nordisk plans to provide more details on coverage and savings for higher doses closer to the launch date. The Wegovy pill is expected to reshape the weight-loss landscape, offering a more accessible and convenient solution for many.
Stay tuned for further updates on the launch and impact of Wegovy’s new pill form as it approaches its January release.
