Family of Four, Including Two Young Daughters, Killed in Crash

URGENT UPDATE: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Brazil as a family of four, including two young daughters aged eight and three, lost their lives in a devastating car crash while en route home for Christmas. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 22, 2023, as the family traveled from Nova Serrana to Ibicuí.

Lucas Celestino Reis, 40, and his wife, Jéssica Silva da Hora, 35, were eagerly anticipating their youngest daughter, Ísis, meeting the extended family for the first time. Tragically, their journey took a fatal turn when their vehicle lost control, leading to a horrific accident. Also in the car was Jéssica’s 19-year-old niece, Rayane Rebouças da Hora.

The family set off early on Friday morning, but shortly after beginning their trip, they vanished from sight. Concerned for their safety, Rayane’s father, who was driving a second vehicle with additional family members, turned back to search for them. After failing to find any trace, he alerted authorities.

Police discovered the first vehicle overturned in a stream beside the motorway hours later. All four occupants were confirmed dead at the scene, with initial investigations suggesting that Lucas lost control, causing the car to hit an embankment before landing in the water. Parts of the vehicle were submerged, complicating the recovery efforts.

Lucas’s sister, Lucimar, expressed her devastation, stating, “He was coming so we could meet his little daughter, whom we never even got to know. It was meant to be a Christmas full of joy. The whole family was waiting for him, with everything prepared. And then we received the bodies.”

The family was laid to rest in Ibicuí on December 24, 2023, amidst an outpouring of grief from the community. This heartbreaking incident adds to a tragic week on Brazil’s roads, following another fatal crash on Christmas Eve that claimed six lives in Poland.

Authorities confirmed that the earlier accident involved two vehicles—a Volkswagen Passat and a Ford Kuga—colliding head-on, resulting in a fiery wreck. Reports indicated that all six individuals involved died at the scene, highlighting the urgent need for road safety measures during the busy holiday travel period.

As investigations into both crashes continue, families and communities are left mourning the loss of their loved ones. This series of tragic events serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present on the roads during festive seasons.
