UPDATE: Former president of the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association, Thomas Mungeer, has just pleaded guilty to grand larceny for stealing funds from the union, as confirmed by the Albany County District Attorney’s Office today. This shocking development highlights serious breaches of trust within law enforcement leadership.

Mungeer, a retired state trooper from Sullivan County, was arrested in October 2022 after an investigation revealed he misappropriated union funds for personal expenses between March 5, 2018, and October 4, 2022. He faces up to one year of interim probation and is required to pay back over $25,621 to the PBA. If he complies with these terms, he may be allowed to withdraw his plea and instead plead guilty to a lesser charge of petit larceny.

In a statement following the guilty plea, the New York State Troopers PBA expressed their deep disappointment. “Tom Mungeer stole from the very people he swore to represent, violating his oath to uphold the law – the worst possible hypocrisy for a member of law enforcement,” the statement read. The PBA emphasized the need for responsible oversight and transparency within their ranks, reflecting a commitment to restoring trust among its members and the public.

Additionally, Mungeer is required to forfeit all police credentials, and his probation will be monitored by authorities in Sullivan County. The PBA is focused on moving forward after the ousting of its former leadership, aiming to ensure fairness and integrity within the union.

This case underscores a critical moment for law enforcement organizations as they grapple with accountability and ethical leadership. The impact of Mungeer’s actions resonates deeply within the law enforcement community, prompting discussions about the importance of transparency and responsible conduct.
