Drake Renames Spotify ‘Botify’ Amid Streaming Controversy
BREAKING: Canadian rapper Drake has just dubbed the music streaming giant Spotify as “Botify” during an impromptu stream with rapper BenDaDonn. This playful jab comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding streaming practices and alleged artificial inflation of song popularity.
In a clip circulating online, Drake casually remarked, “You know what they don’t. But I guarantee that they…I can play it on Botify real quick.” This comment has ignited discussions given Drake’s recent legal battles with Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify, where he accused them of manipulating streaming numbers to favor Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”
Drake’s jab at Spotify is particularly significant as he was recently recognized as the second most-streamed artist in the 2025 Spotify Wrapped, trailing only behind Kendrick Lamar, who ranked fourth. The implications of this nickname shift highlights Drake’s frustration with perceived inequities in music streaming, especially following a lawsuit filed last year alleging UMG and Spotify’s involvement in an illegal scheme to boost “Not Like Us” numbers.
In November 2022, Drake claimed that the popularity of Lamar’s diss track was artificially inflated by the streaming services. He accused them of using bots to create a false impression of its success, further adding to the animosity between the artists. In an official statement, a spokesperson for Spotify responded, stating that the platform “in no way benefits from the industry-wide challenge of artificial streaming,” emphasizing their commitment to combating such practices.
The legal proceedings took a turn in October 2023 when U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas dismissed Drake’s lawsuit against UMG. Despite these setbacks, the rapper remains a dominant figure on Spotify, and his comments during the stream reflect ongoing concerns within the industry about transparency and fairness.
As fans react to Drake’s “Botify” quip, the broader implications for the music industry continue to unfold. Will this playful nickname lead to further scrutiny of streaming practices? The situation is developing, and music lovers worldwide are keen to see how this tension evolves.
Stay tuned for updates as this story progresses and the impact on both Drake’s career and the streaming landscape becomes clearer. Share your thoughts on social media using #DrakeBotify!
