Doctor Urges 8 Habits to Fight Flu Amid 15 Million Cases
UPDATE: As flu season intensifies, with 15 million illnesses reported nationwide, experts urge immediate action to reduce your risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms a staggering 180,000 hospitalizations and 7,400 deaths linked to the flu this season, prompting healthcare professionals to share essential habits for staying healthy.
Dr. Robert Biernbaum, chief medical officer at WellNow Urgent Care, emphasizes that adopting simple daily habits can significantly lower your chances of contracting the flu. “I remind all my patients to keep doing ‘the basics’ to stay happy and healthy throughout the year,” Dr. Biernbaum stated. These habits, while straightforward, are vital in combating the current surge in flu cases.
Here are the eight doctor-approved strategies to enhance your flu defense:
1. **Wash Your Hands Often**
Dr. Biernbaum insists on the importance of frequent hand washing, particularly before meals and after using the restroom. This fundamental practice is crucial in preventing the spread of germs.
2. **Keep Sanitizer and Wipes With You**
Carrying hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes is essential. Dr. Biernbaum highlights the need to sanitize high-touch surfaces, such as gas pumps and doorknobs, which can harbor viruses.
3. **Stay Home When You’re Sick**
If you’re feeling unwell, it’s vital to stay home. This not only protects others from infection but also allows your body the necessary time to recover.
4. **Stay Up to Date With Vaccines**
Vaccination is the best method to avoid serious illness. Alarmingly, less than half of U.S. adults received a flu shot last season, as reported by the CDC. Staying current with vaccines is essential as cases continue to rise.
5. **Prioritize Your Immune System**
With 60% of adults not getting enough sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation, Dr. Biernbaum stresses the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient rest to maintain a strong immune system.
6. **Drink Plenty of Water**
Aim for eight to ten glasses of water daily. Dr. Biernbaum explains that staying hydrated helps flush toxins and supports overall health.
7. **Manage Daily Stress**
Chronic stress can weaken your immune response. Simple practices like deep breathing, stretching, or meditation can enhance your resilience against illnesses.
8. **Avoid Touching Your Face**
Research shows that individuals touch their faces approximately 50 times an hour, often contacting the eyes, nose, and mouth—the primary entry points for viruses. Reducing face-touching is crucial in limiting flu transmission.
With flu cases escalating, these daily habits can significantly impact your health and wellbeing. From adequate hydration to effective stress management, the choices you make each day contribute to your body’s defenses against seasonal illnesses.
As the flu season progresses, it’s more important than ever to implement these simple strategies. Follow Dr. Biernbaum’s advice to stay healthy and protect yourself and your community.
