UPDATE: The annual Denali Winterfest kicked off last weekend, drawing locals and adventurous tourists alike to celebrate winter in breathtaking Alaska. Honeymooners Colin and Teresa Mailley from New Jersey found themselves in the middle of the action, participating in various exciting activities throughout the event.

The festivities began on February 18, 2026, with a lively social kickoff, including a dog weight pull organized by the Denali Education Center at the McKinley Village Community Center. The couple quickly immersed themselves in the winter wonderland, competing in the snow sculpting contest, where their unique creation—a snow castle inspired by warmer climates—secured them a top-three finish.

Denali’s own Damian Popovic announced the winners, stating, “The Mailleys’ sculpture truly embodies the spirit of creativity.” They left the festival with a special certificate, a testament to their innovative spirit. Over 10 teams competed in the contest, with the Shreeve family taking two of the top spots. Their sculptures honored Denali’s dog sledding history and the Alaska railroad, showcasing the rich culture of the region.

The winter festival was not just about sculptures. A thrilling youth ski race took place at Riley Creek Campground, despite temperatures plunging to 35 degrees below zero. Approximately 30 young skiers from Denali and Nenana braved the chill, showcasing their skills and competing for awards in a spirit of camaraderie.

The community gathered for lunch, courtesy of the Doyon/Aramark Joint Venture, at the indoor picnic area next to Denali’s Winter Visitor Center. The guided snowshoe walk attracted around 15 participants, offering a unique opportunity to explore the snowy terrains. Ranger Rachel also engaged youngsters with a storytelling session featuring “Running With the Big Dogs,” adding to the family-friendly atmosphere.

Despite recent snowfall that closed access to popular park areas like Mountain Vista and the Savage Cabin, participants remained undeterred, enjoying all that the frontcountry had to offer. The clear, cold day did not dampen spirits, as families and friends enjoyed the winter activities and created lasting memories.

As the festival wraps up, the excitement of Denali Winterfest continues to resonate in the community. With the success of this year’s event, attention now turns to next year’s festivities, promising even more winter fun and adventure in the heart of Alaska.

Stay tuned for more updates as the region gears up for future winter celebrations!
