UPDATE: The Cumberland Valley Eagles have clinched a thrilling 52-47 victory against the Spring Grove Rockets at the Joseph “Spike” Bahn Memorial Showcase on January 6, 2024. The Eagles showcased resilience, overcoming a late-game challenge to secure their seventh win of the season, improving their record to 7-3.

Cumberland Valley started strong, racing ahead to a 19-8 lead within the first eight minutes. However, the Rockets, led by standout scorer Na’Kera Melbourne, who racked up 22 points, battled back and seized a 30-26 lead in the third quarter. The Eagles responded with a crucial 13-3 run, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Sophie Werner and Basehore.

As the game progressed, the tension heightened. The Eagles looked poised for victory, leading 44-35, but the Rockets closed the gap with a late surge. With just 52 seconds left on the clock, Spring Grove’s Jayleen Eisenhart hit a three-pointer to pull within 48-47. Yet, it was Ema Golalic who sealed the deal, converting two clutch free throws and finishing with a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the closing minutes.

Cumberland Valley Coach Bill Wolf reflected on the game, stating,

“We had the game in hand in the first half. Then, not only was the game not in our hands, they were up four at one point. Good teams kind of settle in and find a way to pull out the win and we did that.”

The Eagles’ scoring was well-distributed, with Payton Basehore leading the charge with 12 points, while Marielle Chambers contributed 9 points and Werner added 8 points. The Eagles demonstrated their depth, making timely shots and defensive stops when it mattered most.
