Colorado Buffs Face Mental Collapse in 77-68 Loss to Stanford
URGENT UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, the Colorado Buffaloes suffered a devastating 77-68 defeat against Stanford on December 2, 2023, in the Naismith Hall of Fame series. Head coach Tad Boyle expressed deep concern over his team’s mental collapse during the crucial second half, marking the first time this season they failed to respond under pressure.
Despite a promising first half where the Buffs led by two points and dominated rebounding at 17-13, everything unraveled after halftime. Stanford outscored Colorado 44-33 and completely overwhelmed them on the boards with a 22-11 rebounding advantage. The Buffs also committed a staggering 11 of their season-high 18 turnovers in the second half.
“It’s the first time all year that we haven’t responded,” Boyle stated. “If we play like this, it’s going to be a tough road for us as we start league play.” His comments highlight the urgent need for the team to regroup as they face a challenging season ahead.
A standout performance came from Stanford freshman Ebuka Okorie, who returned from injury to deliver an explosive game, scoring 32 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Okorie’s impressive 18-for-21 shooting from the free-throw line marks a new high in scoring and rebounding against the Buffs this season.
“His poise, his ability to get to the free throw line — he shot 21 free throws — that’s definitely a skill that’s becoming a growing thing in the NBA,” said CU guard Barrington Hargress, emphasizing Okorie’s growing prowess on the court.
Colorado’s offensive performance reached a low point, registering a season-low in points and a dismal 3-point percentage of .235. The Buffs also went without a blocked shot for the first time this season and saw forward Bangot Dak struggle with a career-high of five turnovers.
As the Buffs head into their next match, the pressure is mounting. With league play on the horizon, how they respond to this defeat will be crucial. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Colorado can shake off this defeat and regain their competitive edge.
