Cole Hutson Back with Team USA After Injury Scare, Day-to-Day
URGENT UPDATE: Team USA defenseman Cole Hutson has rejoined his teammates after a concerning injury during a game against Switzerland in the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championships. Hutson, who was stretchered off the ice after a shot hit him in the back of the neck, is now listed as day-to-day as the tournament progresses.
During the second period of the match, which Team USA won 2-1, Hutson was struck and required immediate medical attention. He was taken to the hospital but returned to the team approximately 30 minutes after the game concluded, as confirmed by U.S. coach Bob Motzko on Sunday afternoon.
Hutson attended practice at TRIA Rink in St. Paul but did not skate, sparking concerns among fans and teammates alike. “He’s back with us,” said Motzko. “He had a smile on his face this morning when he got on the bus. We’ll talk with the medical people and go day-to-day.”
“We’re all scared. You don’t know what’s going on,” Motzko added, reflecting on the intense emotions surrounding the incident. “Now it’s just day-to-day and hopefully we get him back.”
Teammate Cole Eiserman expressed his relief at Hutson’s return. The two have been friends since childhood, and Eiserman was visibly affected when Hutson was injured. “I wasn’t really a hockey player in that moment,” he said, recalling the incident. “He’s been one of my best friends for life.” A poignant photo captured the moment Eiserman held Hutson’s hand as he awaited medical care.
Hutson, a standout in the tournament, is among the most prolific American defenders, tallying three goals and 11 assists in just nine World Junior games over the past two years. He currently holds the second-most points by an American defenseman in WJC history, tied with NHL star Ryan Suter.
In college, Hutson has continued to shine at Boston University, where he has recorded 14 goals and 34 assists in the 2024-25 season alone. His consistent performance has made him a key player for Team USA, and Motzko emphasized his importance to the squad, stating, “He’s one of the best defensemen in the world.”
The team remains optimistic about Hutson’s potential return to the lineup before the tournament concludes. “We need to step up and carry our weight,” Motzko said. “The fact that he’s back with us is a relief. He’s going to be inspirational to the guys.”
As Team USA prepares for their next match against Slovakia at 5 p.m. on Monday, Hutson’s positive progress could provide a much-needed boost. “Adversity hits every single team in this tournament,” Motzko noted. “It’s how you handle it. Maybe this is ours?”
The hockey community is rallying behind Hutson, hoping for a swift recovery as the tournament intensifies. Fans and players alike are eager to see him back on the ice, underscoring the emotional ties that bind the team together during these challenging moments.
