BREAKING: Citadel’s Chief Technology Officer, Umesh Subramanian, is stepping down from his role after seven years at the helm. This change was confirmed in an internal memo from COO Gerald Beeson on November 8, 2023, marking a significant shift in the company’s leadership.

Subramanian, who joined Citadel in 2018 from Goldman Sachs, will transition to focus on new initiatives outside of technology within the firm. Beeson stated, “Umesh Subramanian will be taking on new challenges and opportunities at Citadel… and we will also support his personal interest in pursuing new endeavors outside of Citadel.”

Effective immediately, Andrew Janian, previously head of equities engineering, will return to Citadel to serve as interim CTO. Janian left Citadel in early 2025 but is now stepping back into a critical leadership role during this transition.

This leadership shake-up comes as Citadel’s flagship Wellington fund reported a 10.2% return last year, which fell short compared to its competitors, raising questions about internal strategies and future performance.

Subramanian is the second high-profile executive to depart Citadel in recent months, following the exit of former CFO Andrew Philipp, who left in late November to join Schonfeld as co-president.

As Citadel navigates this major executive change, industry watchers will be keenly observing how this will impact the firm’s strategic direction in an increasingly competitive market.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
