Chicago Schools Urged to Consider Remote Learning Amid ICE Surge
BREAKING: Chicago Public Schools (CPS) board members are urgently advocating for remote learning options as federal immigration enforcement intensifies in the city. The push comes in response to a series of distressing incidents, including the recent detainment of a 17-year-old student by ICE agents, raising fears among families and students across the district.
During a heated board meeting held on Thursday, October 5, 2023, CPS officials discussed the grim reality facing students in neighborhoods heavily affected by ICE operations. Board member Emma Lozano expressed the urgent need for remote learning, stating, “Our parents are asking for remote learning if possible,” highlighting deep anxieties that students might not see their parents again amid rising enforcement actions.
In a statement, Interim Superintendent Macquline King confirmed that discussions regarding remote learning are underway, but emphasized that such measures hinge on an emergency declaration from Governor JB Pritzker. As of now, there has been no response from the governor’s office regarding this request.
Amidst increasing tensions, reports of confrontations between protesters and federal agents have escalated. Notably, an incident described by DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin involved federal agents being attacked with fireworks and rocks, leading to the deployment of chemical munitions by border patrol agents. This alarming context only adds to the urgency of the CPS board’s discussions.
In light of these developments, CPS has enhanced its 24/7 Student Safety Center to provide better support to schools and families during this turbulent time. However, the critical question of whether to implement remote learning broadly or selectively remains unresolved, as board members await clarity from state authorities.
The Chicago Teachers Union has voiced its concerns, labeling the reconsideration of remote learning as “irresponsible” without concrete plans to ensure student safety. They emphasize the dire need for a balanced approach that prioritizes both education and the well-being of students and families.
Students like Destiny Singleton, a senior at Ogden International High School, are feeling the weight of the escalating situation. “We feel the weight of ICE in our city, in our country,” Singleton shared, her voice trembling with emotion as she described the constant vigilance among students regarding ICE agent movements, often shared through real-time updates among peers.
As discussions continue, the urgency for action grows. Interim CEO King has urged board members to “activate your bases and your individual districts, talk to legislators, elected officials,” underscoring the bureaucratic hurdles that complicate swift responses to community concerns.
With families on edge and the stakes higher than ever, the CPS board faces mounting pressure to make a decision that could significantly impact the educational environment and safety of thousands of students in Chicago. As developments unfold, the key question remains: will CPS be able to pivot to remote learning in time to address the immediate fears of its community?
