Chauncey Billups Arrested in Poker Scheme; Blazers Move Forward
UPDATE: The Portland Trail Blazers face an unprecedented challenge after head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested in connection with a sprawling alleged poker scheme that has sent shockwaves through the NBA. Billups, along with Miami Heat player Terry Rozier, was taken into custody on October 25, 2023, for their roles in illicit gambling activities that reportedly cheated victims out of at least $7 million.
Billups, 49, was arrested at his Lake Oswego home early Thursday morning, just hours after the Blazers suffered a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in their season opener. The team, now under the interim leadership of assistant coach Tiago Splitter, took to the court against the Golden State Warriors Friday night amid a somber atmosphere.
The mood in the Blazers’ locker room was heavy as players grappled with the shocking news. “It’s not an easy situation. We’re thinking about him and his family,” said forward Deni Avdija. “We really love Chauncey and what he’s done for this organization.” The team is navigating a tumultuous start to a season that began with high hopes.
Following the arrests, the NBA placed both Billups and Rozier on leave. Splitter, who joined the Blazers’ coaching staff in June, addressed the media with a mixture of concern and determination. “Not great, not great. But we’ve got to move forward; we have a job to do,” he stated. “We have a great opportunity in front of us to have a good season with this team, and I’m excited about that.”
Billups’ arrest is part of a larger investigation involving 31 individuals, some of whom are linked to organized crime. Federal law enforcement officials described the scheme as a conspiracy to fix high-stakes card games. The scandal has cast a shadow over the NBA, prompting Commissioner Adam Silver to express his “deeply disturbed” sentiments regarding the indictments.
Despite the turmoil, the Blazers had cultivated a promising roster, highlighted by young stars such as Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. The team also welcomed back fan-favorite guard Damian Lillard, who, despite rehabbing an Achilles injury, garnered a standing ovation at the season opener. “I was stunned. Shocked. I think everybody was,” said fan Mitch Weaver, who attended the game wearing a Trail Blazers sweatshirt. “We had Dame back. Everything was looking up.”
The uncertainty surrounding the team’s future was somewhat alleviated during the offseason when the estate of late owner Paul Allen sold the franchise to a group led by Tom Dundon, who promised to keep the team in Portland. Billups, who signed a multiyear contract extension in April, was entering his fifth season with the Blazers after guiding them to a 36-46 record last year. This marks the fourth consecutive season the team has missed the playoffs.
As the situation unfolds, the Blazers are left to confront the immediate challenges of their new reality. The team will need to rally in the face of adversity, with Splitter at the helm, as they seek to navigate the rest of the season amid these serious allegations against their former coach.
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Trail Blazers respond to this shocking setback and whether they can maintain their competitive spirit in the face of such turmoil.
