Cary Elwes Remembers Rob Reiner After Tragic Death
UPDATE: In a heartfelt tribute, actor Cary Elwes has shared his grief following the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, who were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2023. Elwes, known for his role in the iconic film The Princess Bride, took to Instagram to reflect on his profound connection with Reiner, emphasizing the impact the director had on his life and career.
Elwes expressed, “I can finally put my grief into words,” revealing that he was only 24 years old when he first met Reiner. The actor shared rare footage from the set of their beloved film, stating, “From that very first meeting, I fell in love with him.” As he reminisced about their time together, Elwes noted, “He was giving me the keys to the castle,” highlighting the invaluable opportunity Reiner provided him.
In his tribute, Elwes described Reiner as “a man who felt deeply,” emphasizing the director’s genuine compassion for others. “He always tried to find the best in people,” Elwes wrote, recalling how Reiner prioritized kindness over status. The actor further praised Reiner’s filmmaking philosophy, stating, “Once the movie is released, it belongs to other people. But while you are making it, that’s your time on the planet.”
Elwes fondly remembered their shared laughter during filming, calling it “beyond great” and a testament to the love, loyalty, and sacrifice that The Princess Bride embodies. He also paid tribute to Michele Reiner, describing her as a “gifted photographer” and an “incredibly loving, intelligent person” who was passionate about family and helping others.
The actor emphasized the couple’s commitment to social causes, stating, “Their only interest in fame was that it allowed them to shine a light on causes they believed in.” Elwes added, “Whenever we got together, we would talk about family, life, movies, and politics. But without fail, Rob would always find a way to make us laugh.”
In a poignant conclusion, he expressed his deep sense of loss, saying, “Because my heart still aches every time I think of you, I know the grief of losing you too soon will likely never go away.” Elwes extended his condolences to the Reiner family, friends, and fans, affirming the lasting impact of their legacy.
Tragedy struck as Nick Reiner, the couple’s youngest son, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths. He was taken into custody shortly after their bodies were discovered. Nick did not enter a plea during his first court appearance on December 17, 2023, and is scheduled for arraignment on January 7, 2024.
As the world mourns the losses of Rob and Michele Reiner, Cary Elwes’ tribute serves as a powerful reminder of their profound influence and the love they shared not only with each other but with those around them.
