Canada’s women’s speedskating team has advanced to the gold-medal race in the team pursuit event at the upcoming Olympics, following a significant semifinal victory over the United States. The trio of Ivanie Blondin, Isabelle Weidemann, and Valerie Maltais will compete against the Netherlands for the chance to defend the title they won in 2022.

The decisive semifinal took place on March 5, 2024, where Canada showcased impressive teamwork and speed to secure their place in the final. The much-anticipated gold-medal race is scheduled for 10:47 a.m. ET / 7:47 a.m. PT on the same day. This victory marks a significant milestone for Canada, ensuring the country will achieve its 12th medal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Maltais has already made her mark at these Olympics, earning Canada’s first medal in Italy—a bronze in the 3,000 metres. Weidemann, who previously won three medals at the 2022 Olympics, and Blondin, a two-time medalist, are eager to add to their accolades. Both Weidemann and Blondin hail from Ottawa, while Maltais represents La Baie, Quebec.

The competition in the final will be fierce, as the Netherlands claimed gold in team pursuit at last year’s world single-distance championships, while Canada secured the bronze. The Canadians will aim to leverage their experience and previous success against a strong Dutch team.

As the excitement builds for the gold-medal showdown, Canadian fans remain hopeful for another Olympic triumph in speedskating. The unity and determination displayed by Blondin, Weidemann, and Maltais serve as a testament to their preparation and commitment to excellence on the world stage.
