URGENT UPDATE: California is bracing for severe flooding as the National Weather Service (NWS) issues widespread flood-related alerts across the state. As of Friday morning, December 29, 2023, an atmospheric river event has brought intense rainfall, leading to flood watches that span from Merced to Kern counties, including critical areas like the San Joaquin Valley and the coastal ranges.

Flood watches are currently in effect for numerous regions, including the Inland Empire, Sacramento Valley, and parts of Los Angeles County. Additionally, flash flood warnings are active for portions of Ventura County, with officials urging residents to prepare for possible emergency situations.

According to the NWS Weather Prediction Center (WPC), California can expect a short-term risk of flash flooding due to additional bands of moderate to heavy rain moving into the area. The WPC noted, “more bands of moderate to heavy rain ahead of this final system continue to stream into California early this morning.”

As strong winds and embedded thunderstorms threaten coastal areas, the NWS warns residents to stay vigilant and heed local emergency alerts. The forecast indicates that while the region will dry out this weekend, the immediate danger persists.

Flood advisories have also been issued for areas including northwestern Santa Clara County and Santa Cruz County, as well as parts of Butte, Colusa, and Shasta counties. The NWS cautions that while flooding may not be extreme, it could still pose “significant inconvenience” and potentially threaten life and property.

The Sierra Nevada mountains are expected to receive additional heavy snowfall before conditions begin to stabilize tonight. The NWS emphasizes the importance of listening to emergency officials and staying informed through their website and social media channels.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible evacuation and to avoid unnecessary travel as conditions remain hazardous. Emergency responders are on high alert as California faces this significant weather event.

For continuous updates, check the NWS website or follow their official social media accounts. Stay safe and heed all warnings as this urgent situation unfolds.
