Brian Ortega’s Lightweight Move Postponed Again Due to Injury
UPDATE: Brian Ortega’s anticipated move to lightweight has been postponed once again due to injuries. The former featherweight title challenger, who holds a record of 16-5, announced his withdrawal from the 155-pound bout against Renato Moicano (20-7-1) at UFC 326, scheduled for March 7, 2024, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
In an urgent statement shared on Instagram, Ortega, 34, confirmed his decision, stating, “I’m OK, health is good, no surgeries or nothing crazy like that. But I do need to take a little bit of some time off to nurse these injuries that I have right now.” He expressed disappointment over the delay, emphasizing the need to let his body heal properly and undergo physical therapy.
Ortega’s move to lightweight has been a topic of discussion for over a year. However, unexpected opportunities at featherweight and now persistent injuries have stalled his transition. In 2024, he initially planned to shift divisions but had to withdraw from a matchup against Diego Lopes at UFC 303 due to medical complications during his weight cut.
The latest setback marks yet another hurdle for Ortega, who faced Aljamain Sterling in a scheduled featherweight bout in August, despite being hospitalized during his weight cut. He previously challenged for the featherweight title in 2018 and 2021, but was unable to secure the championship.
As of now, the UFC has not announced a replacement for Moicano, leaving fans eager for updates on the bout. The postponement raises questions about Ortega’s future in the lightweight division and when he will finally make the much-anticipated move.
Fans and followers are left waiting for Ortega’s recovery timeline and his next steps in the UFC. The community remains hopeful for his return to the octagon, as he has long been a fan favorite. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as Ortega aims to heal and re-enter the competitive landscape of mixed martial arts.
