Blind Therapist Offers Free Massages to Single Parents NOW

Stewart, who lost his sight eight years ago, has turned his life around since opening Unsighted Massage at Nicole Richards Hair Salon on 159th Street. “I’m in a better place now than I was back then,” he said, highlighting his emotional and mental growth. His journey from a forklift driver to a massage therapist was catalyzed by his blindness, prompting him to give back to others facing hardships.

In a heartfelt tribute to his mother, who he credits for her sacrifices as a single parent, Stewart is committed to supporting others in similar situations. “A lot of my overhead is my time and my hands, and I don’t mind giving that to people,” he explained. This initiative comes as a response to the plight of families following the loss of SNAP benefits for approximately 2 million Illinoisans during a federal government shutdown.

Stewart’s first massage giveaway received unexpected support from Tracy Beagarie, who discovered him on social media. After booking a massage, she offered to create charcuterie boards for the single parents receiving massages. “You don’t always need the recognition,” Beagarie remarked, emphasizing the importance of kindness in the community.

The emotional response from those benefiting from Stewart’s services has been overwhelming. “I had one client who broke down in tears just because of how bad she was struggling,” Stewart shared. His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Mary Lynn Fleck, owner of Nicole Richards Salon, praised Stewart’s dedication. After her breast cancer diagnosis, she found relief through his lymphatic drainage therapy, which provided her with much-needed comfort during treatment. “It was the best night’s sleep I got throughout my whole chemo treatment,” Fleck said.

Stewart, who graduated from Moraine Valley Community College’s massage therapy program in 2023, has built a reputation for his consistency and drive. “Whatever he wants, I fully support him. Anything we can do to help him, we’re all there,” Fleck stated.
