Beloved Educator Madeline Crews Passes Away at 93
Madeline “Maddy” Crews, a cherished educator and community member, passed away peacefully at her home on January 23, 2026, at the age of 93 after a brief illness. Born on July 15, 1932, in the picturesque mountain village of Morinesio, Italy, she was the daughter of Valentina and Tomaso Peirona.
In 1933, Maddy and her mother relocated to the United States to join her father in Santa Cruz, California, where she spent the majority of her life. After graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 1950, she pursued higher education at San Jose State University, earning a degree in Education.
Career and Community Engagement
Maddy’s teaching career began with a 5th-grade class at Laurel Elementary School. She later moved to Westlake Elementary, where she taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades for over three decades. After 30 years in education, she retired, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved teacher who inspired countless students. Many former pupils and parents fondly recalled her influence and commitment to their success.
Throughout her life, Maddy was deeply involved in her community. She remained steadfast in her support of Holy Cross Church and participated in several philanthropic organizations, including the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF), TTT, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Her volunteer work included significant contributions to the Holy Cross Food Pantry, Grey Bears, and I-You Venture.
Maddy also embraced lifelong learning and fitness, actively participating in Lifelong Learners and Toadal Fitness Tai Chi classes. In retirement, she and her husband, Jerry Crews, joined the swing dance revival, enjoying evenings filled with music and dance alongside new friends.
Family and Legacy
Maddy’s family life was equally rich. She married Jerry Crews on April 29, 1955, at the Mission Santa Cruz chapel, becoming a stepmother to his daughter, Sue. The couple later welcomed two daughters, Lisa and Amy. Maddy was a devoted wife for 52 years and a loving mother who supported her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her brother, Alfred Peirona, and several family members, including her daughters Lisa (Geoff) Foley and Amy (Gregg) Jacobsen, along with their children and grandchildren. Maddy’s family expresses profound gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Hospice of Santa Cruz County and Visiting Angels during her final days.
Maddy’s passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Mission Santa Cruz on March 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM. The family plans to host a Celebration of Life in July. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Siena Maternity House, NPR, or a charity of personal choice.
Madeline Crews will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to education, her vibrant community spirit, and her deep love for family and friends.
