Bears Merchandise Sales Surge 41% as Team Heads for Playoffs
UPDATE: Bears merchandise is flying off the shelves in Chicago as excitement surges ahead of the playoffs. Sports retailers are reporting a staggering 41% increase in sales of Bears gear compared to last year, following the team’s thrilling comeback victory over the Green Bay Packers last week.
At Clark Street Sports, which operates eight locations across the Chicago area, co-owner Jason Caref describes the current sales boom as a “huge boost” to business. “Christmas came early for our company this year,” Caref stated. The Bears are headed to the playoffs for the first time since January 2021, and the enthusiasm is palpable among fans and retailers alike.
In-store and online sales have surged, making it challenging to find parking at their Albany Park location at 4506 W. Lawrence Ave.. Store manager Fatima Reynoso noted that this week has been the busiest in her four years at the shop.
Fans are flocking to buy everything from hats to jerseys. On Friday, Camilo Cumpian was spotted purchasing a Bears hat as a gift for his son, Orlando. The hat commemorates Super Bowl XX, which the Bears won in 1986. “If we’re lucky, history will repeat itself,” Cumpian remarked.
At Wrigleyville Sports on 959 W. Addison St., the demand is equally impressive. General manager Devin Carlstrom reported that “sales have been crazy” and that Bears gear topped many Christmas wish lists this year. “On Bears game days, customers have been coming in to buy team merchandise,” he added.
The Bears’ success has revitalized small businesses that have faced significant challenges throughout the year, including inflation and tariffs. Caref highlighted the difficulty of selling merchandise for struggling teams but expressed optimism about this turnaround season, which also saw the Cubs advance to the National League Division Series.
Among the most sought-after items are jerseys of rookie stars Kyle Monangai and Colston Loveland, with Monangai jerseys priced at $130 and $175 selling out within just 48 hours. “Anything with the Bears is flying off the shelves,” Caref noted.
With the winter chill setting in, Bears-branded winter accessories such as hats, gloves, and scarves are also in high demand. Clark Street Sports even has merchandise ready to declare the Bears division champions, pending their performance in the regular season. “As soon as they win, we can sell it,” Caref confirmed.
The excitement isn’t just about merchandise; it reflects a renewed sense of community pride among fans. Associate Wes Nunez emphasized the joy he sees in customers, stating, “Football brings the community together. Everyone is proud to be a Chicagoan now.”
As the Bears prepare for the playoffs, the buzz around the franchise has transformed into a shopping frenzy, fueling hope and enthusiasm across the city. Fans like Addam Haynes are thrilled to support their team, with Haynes admitting, “It’s exciting to wear their clothes. The whole city is behind them.”
As retailers brace for what could be an even busier playoff season, all eyes are on the Bears. This surge in merchandise sales is more than just numbers; it signifies a collective spirit and longing for victory in the heart of Chicago.
