UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, a group of bank robbers executed a brazen heist worth an estimated £30 million from a bank vault in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, just days before Christmas. The audacious thieves not only drilled 18 inches into the vault wall but also took the time to pay for their parking before making their getaway.

Bizarre video footage shows a masked man calmly inserting coins into a parking meter after fleeing the scene. The video, which has since gone viral, captures the moment this “honest” thief ensured he paid the correct amount, despite just completing one of the largest bank heists in recent German history. Another clip reveals an accomplice lifting the parking barrier for a getaway vehicle, a white Mercedes van.

Authorities confirmed that the robbery impacted around 2,500 customers, with initial estimates suggesting the stolen goods could reach up to £30 million. Police believe the actual amount may be much higher. A spokesperson for the police stated, “We are assuming a mid double-digit million euro sum,” which could solidify this heist as one of the biggest in Germany’s history.

The break-in at Sparkasse bank went undetected for several days, with police only notified early Monday morning when a fire alarm was triggered. By that time, the culprits had vanished. Investigators suspect the burglary occurred during the Christmas holidays or even the previous weekend.

Upon arrival, emergency services discovered a massive hole drilled through the vault wall. The masked gang, believed to consist of two to three individuals, entered the building via a parking garage and navigated through several secured doors to reach an archive room adjacent to the vault. Using a 20kg industrial drill equipped with a synthetic diamond-coated crown, the thieves managed to penetrate the reinforced concrete wall. Experts estimate the drilling operation took between two and four hours.

Once inside, the robbers targeted as many safe deposit boxes as possible, escaping through the hole they created. At the time of the heist, the vault contained approximately 3,300 safe deposit boxes, rented by around 2,700 customers. Reports indicate that up to 90 percent of these boxes may have been breached. Each box is insured for up to €10,300, which means the bank could face liabilities totaling €33,990,000 (£30,000,000).

As part of their investigation, police are reviewing similar surveillance footage and conducting interviews with local residents. Witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags in the parking garage stairwell on the night of the break-in. However, investigators currently report no promising leads.

With the perpetrators still at large, this extraordinary heist continues to capture public attention. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to solve this case. The bizarre juxtaposition of the robbers’ courteous parking payment amidst their criminal actions has left many questioning the audacity of their plan.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as police continue their investigation into what could be a historic bank heist in Germany.
