“Avatar: Fire and Ash” Surges to $345 Million Opening Weekend
UPDATE: The highly anticipated “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has taken the box office by storm, raking in an astounding $345 million globally during its opening weekend. The film generated $88 million in the U.S. and Canada alone, solidifying its status as a box office powerhouse.
The third installment of the beloved franchise, owned by Disney and produced by 20th Century Studios, saw a significant $257 million from international markets. This massive opening comes against a backdrop of a production budget estimated at $350 million, raising questions about profitability and future releases.
In China, the film debuted with an impressive $57.6 million, making it the second highest opening weekend for a U.S. film in 2025, trailing only behind Disney’s recent hit, “Zootopia 2.” The massive box office responses in markets like Germany, France, and China reflect a resurgence for American films, which have faced challenges due to geopolitical tensions and the rise of domestic productions.
The success of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is a much-needed boost for theater owners, who have experienced a tumultuous year at the box office. Following a rocky first quarter, the spring season delivered hits like “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners,” but the summer months were mostly underwhelming. The fall had left many in the industry anxious until recent releases, including “Wicked: For Good” and “Zootopia 2,” began drawing audiences once again.
Meanwhile, Angel Studio’s animated biblical tale “David” secured the second spot at the box office with an estimated domestic gross of $22 million. The thriller “The Housemaid” and “The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants” rounded out the top five alongside “Zootopia 2,” which continues to perform well.
As “Avatar: Fire and Ash” continues to break records, industry analysts are closely monitoring its trajectory. The strong international reception signals that, despite recent setbacks, major films can still thrive, particularly in markets like China. The next few weeks will be crucial as theaters aim to maintain this momentum and capitalize on the holiday season.
