UPDATE: Audrey Denney and Assemblyman James Gallagher (R-Yuba City) have officially entered the race for California’s Congressional District 1, just days ahead of the critical June 2 special election. The deadline for candidates to file paperwork was March 6, 2026, and both candidates took their oaths this week, setting the stage for a competitive political showdown.

The urgency surrounding this election comes after the passing of former Congressman Doug LaMalfa. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a special election to fill the remainder of LaMalfa’s term. Voters will face two significant congressional primary elections on June 2, with Denney, Gallagher, and former State Senator Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) emerging as frontrunners.

Denney expressed her commitment to the campaign, stating on Facebook,

“This campaign is about something bigger than one race. It’s about showing that regular people — not corporations or political insiders — still have the power to shape our democracy.”

Her statement reflects a growing sentiment among voters seeking change.

Gallagher, confident in his campaign, emphasized the need for immediate representation in Washington, D.C. He stated,

“You’ve got to get 50% of the vote plus one so that we can go back and immediately have a voice in Washington, D.C. and we’re going to do that.”

He reiterated his vision for change, aiming to improve conditions for citizens in Northern California.

In the coming weeks, candidates must track all donations, including those from political action committees and businesses, with pre-election statements due by April 11. If a candidate secures more than 50% of the vote in the special election, they will assume the seat immediately, serving until January 27, 2027. Otherwise, a general election will be held in August.

This election is critical for the future of District 1, as it also coincides with the statewide primary for the full two-year term starting in 2027, which will take place on the same day, June 2. Voters will receive separate ballots for the special primary, adding to the urgency of the upcoming elections.

As the political landscape shifts, both Denney and Gallagher are gearing up for an intense campaign season, with the potential to redefine representation in Congress. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops and the candidates continue to shape their platforms in response to voter concerns.
