Angelyne Fans Slam Marc Jacobs Over Controversial Tote Design
URGENT UPDATE: Fans of LA’s iconic billboard queen Angelyne are voicing their outrage over Marc Jacobs‘ new tote collection, which many believe has ripped off Angelyne’s signature style. The controversy erupted after Jacobs launched his “The City” tote line, featuring a provocative illustration reminiscent of Angelyne’s famous billboards.
The bags, inspired by cities like Paris, New York, and LA, include a depiction of a voluptuous woman above Hollywood signage that closely mirrors Angelyne’s aesthetic. Fans wasted no time in expressing their displeasure, with music producer and DJ Cazwell leading the charge. He shared a reel on social media, urging Jacobs to either compensate Angelyne or “stop” what he described as “thievery.”
On Tuesday, Cazwell highlighted comments from Angelyne supporters, including a post from London-based street artist Pegasus, who criticized the tote’s execution. In a striking remark, Pegasus wrote, “Girl be angry with the fact they made you look like Gumby. Let’s partner up and create a bag worth carrying.”
Cazwell, a longtime admirer of Angelyne, recounted his experience purchasing an Angelyne T-shirt from her pink Corvette. He advised Jacobs, “Put some money inside the pockets of someone who clearly has inspired you. I hope you make the right choice.”
Angelyne, whose rise to fame in the 1980s was highlighted in the 2022 Peacock series “Angelyne,” has not directly addressed Jacobs’ totes yet, but her silence is notable given her historical candidness. Previously, she expressed dissatisfaction with the series depicting her life, stating, “It doesn’t do me justice. Would you be flattered if someone played you and misrepresented you?”
As the backlash continues to grow, many are eagerly awaiting Angelyne’s response. The enigmatic star, who has made headlines for her two gubernatorial runs in California, has a reputation for speaking her mind.
A representative for Jacobs has yet to respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, fans are rallying on social media, and the hashtag #JusticeForAngelyne is trending.
This developing story highlights not just a clash of artistic inspirations but also the ongoing dialogue about ownership and recognition in the creative industry. As Angelyne’s fans demand accountability, the implications of this controversy may significantly affect both her legacy and Jacobs’ brand image.
