Anchorage’s Seward Highway Interchange to Undergo $40M Redesign by 2030
UPDATE: A major redesign for one of Anchorage’s busiest and most hazardous highway interchanges has just been announced, with a projected cost of $40 million. The project, primarily funded by the Federal Highway Administration, is set to kick off in 2030, despite the urgent need for safety improvements.
The interchange at Seward Highway and Tudor Road is notorious for traffic jams and accidents, with over 80,000 vehicles traversing it daily, making it the busiest intersection in Alaska. Project manager Galen Jones emphasized that the current configuration poses significant risks due to high speeds and traffic volume.
This critical reconstruction will replace the aging bridge and enhance both safety and traffic flow. The existing bridge, which barely meets current clearance standards at just over 16 feet, will be raised to comply with the 18-foot standard. Plans include widening narrow sidewalks and improving separation between pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, making the area safer for non-motorized users.
Currently in the preliminary design phase, engineers are exploring layout alternatives, with final decisions expected by the end of this year. The redesign aims to alleviate bottlenecks created by the single turning lane in each direction, especially during rush hour. Although roundabouts were considered, they were ultimately dismissed due to safety concerns over required three-lane configurations.
The project will extend west to Old Seward Highway and east to MacInnes Street, impacting the area significantly. Community leaders, including Assembly member Felix Rivera, have voiced frustrations over the lack of immediate safety enhancements in the area, highlighting the interchange’s status as one of the deadliest roads in the state.
Looking ahead, another critical project is planned for the 36th Avenue intersection, which aims to separate regional traffic from local commuters. This future redesign will further enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians by bridging the Seward Highway over 36th Avenue.
The urgency for these improvements cannot be overstated. As Anchorage continues to grow, the need for safer, more efficient transportation infrastructure is critical to ensuring the safety of all road users. Residents and commuters alike are urged to stay informed about these developments as the planning progresses toward a much-needed transformation of this vital corridor.
