According to Mexico’s national seismological agency, the epicenter was located in Guerrero state, just less than three miles from the town of San Marcos. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake struck 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, a mountainous area about 57 miles northeast of Acapulco.
Immediate reports indicate that seismic alarms rang out, shaking the very foundations of Mexico City and Acapulco. Residents and tourists fled into the streets in a frantic effort to escape potential aftershocks. Notably, the tremor interrupted President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press conference of the year, highlighting the quake’s intensity.
As rescue efforts begin, authorities are addressing numerous landslides and extensive power outages across the region. Emergency services are on high alert, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The earthquake was also felt in other significant cities, including Veracruz and Pueblo, prompting widespread concern. Residents are advised to stay vigilant for aftershocks as the situation develops.
WHAT’S NEXT: Authorities are urging people to remain outdoors until structural assessments can confirm the safety of buildings. Emergency response teams are mobilizing to assist affected areas. Updates on rescue operations and further assessments will be provided as more information becomes available.
This devastating event underscores the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters, reminding residents of the need for preparedness. Stay tuned for more updates on this unfolding situation.
