West Virginia Mountaineers Secure Narrow Win Over Kansas State
West Virginia University (WVU) maintained its perfect home record on February 7, 2024, with a hard-fought 59-54 victory against Kansas State University at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown. The win improved the Mountaineers’ home record to 13-0 this season, despite a challenging performance that featured numerous missed opportunities from both teams.
Struggles and Breakthroughs Define the Match
The game was marked by a series of missed lay-ups, but none proved more pivotal than Treysen Eaglestaff’s unsuccessful attempt with just 43 seconds remaining. The 6-foot-6 guard quickly rebounded the ball and scored, drawing a foul in the process, which allowed him to seal the game with a successful free throw. Eaglestaff finished the night with 12 points and nine rebounds, reflecting a significant improvement in his approach to the game. “When I first got here, I would just kind of float stuff at the rim,” Eaglestaff noted. “I got a wake-up from coach (Ross) Hodge and coach (Phil) Forte about not doing that; to go at a guy’s chin and be a man.”
WVU coach Ross Hodge emphasized the nature of the game, stating, “Sometimes we’re going to have to do things the hard way.” Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang echoed this sentiment, characterizing the match as “not for the faint of heart,” especially given the struggles of both teams on the court.
Offensive Challenges for Both Teams
Neither team managed to shoot better than 41.8% from the field, reflecting a sluggish offensive performance. WVU initially held a 10-point lead with 15:06 left in the game, but a lengthy scoring drought allowed Kansas State to take a 49-45 lead with just under four minutes remaining. The Mountaineers faced early difficulties, not scoring their first point until nearly six minutes into the game, which came from a cherry-picking lay-up by Chance Moore.
Despite these challenges, the Mountaineers managed to find momentum through strong offensive rebounding in the second half, securing 10 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. Hodge remarked on the team’s ability to make key plays down the stretch, ultimately securing a crucial win in the Big 12 Conference.
Kansas State’s P.J. Haggerty, who entered the match as the fifth-leading scorer in the nation, struggled significantly, missing his first seven shots and finishing the game with 16 points on 6 of 19 shooting. His final moments included an awkward three-point attempt intended to draw a foul instead of focusing on scoring, a decision Tang later addressed, emphasizing the need for Haggerty to focus on making the shot.
Honor Huff contributed significantly for the Mountaineers, leading the team with 17 points and impacting the game through both scoring and playmaking. He executed several impressive shots, including a long-range three-pointer from around 33 feet and a no-look assist that added to his overall impact.
As the Mountaineers prepare to host Baylor on February 10, 2024, they will look to build on this victory and improve their performance as they continue their season.
Ultimately, the match showcased the tenacity of both teams, with WVU emerging victorious through grit and determination, a testament to their ongoing efforts in the competitive landscape of college basketball.
