Ty Montgomery Aims to Impress NFL Scouts at Toledo Pro Day
Ty Montgomery, the standout wide receiver from John Carroll University, is set to showcase his skills at a pro day at the University of Toledo on March 23, 2024. After not receiving an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, Montgomery is determined to make an impression on NFL scouts. His performance, particularly in the highly anticipated 40-yard dash, will be a focal point of the event.
Montgomery, who gained attention as the only Division III player at the Senior Bowl, confirmed his participation to The News-Herald. He previously clocked a time of 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash before the American Bowl, a new college all-star game in Florida. He expressed his eagerness to repeat that performance, stating, “In my situation, I feel I have to run (the 40).”
Over the past two seasons, Montgomery has solidified his status as a legitimate NFL prospect. In 2024, he recorded 57 catches for 1,071 yards and 17 touchdowns. This past season, he raised the bar with 119 catches, 1,528 yards, and 15 touchdowns, earning consensus All-America honors in Division III. The question looms whether he can become John Carroll’s first NFL draft selection since 1991, when quarterback Larry Weinke was picked by the New York Giants.
Mount Union and Other Notable Player Developments
In addition to Montgomery’s upcoming pro day, other players from the region are also making headlines. Mikey Maloney, a graduate of Riverside High School, had a remarkable redshirt freshman season as the starting quarterback for Mount Union. He led the Purple Raiders to an impressive 11-1 record and claimed the Ohio Athletic Conference title. Under new offensive coordinator Kevin Burke, a legendary figure in Mount Union football history, Maloney hopes to continue his success. In 2025, he accumulated 3,221 yards in total offense and secured the OAC’s Bob Packard Most Outstanding Back award.
Meanwhile, Nick Semptimphelter, who previously played quarterback for John Carroll, has signed with the Munich Cowboys of the German Football League. His accomplishments include leading the Blue Streaks to two consecutive Division III playoff appearances and setting an NCAA completion percentage record of 77.9 percent in 2025. Semptimphelter is set to make his debut with the Cowboys on May 9.
As these athletes prepare to take the next steps in their football careers, the spotlight remains on Ty Montgomery and his performance at Toledo. His journey from Division III football to potential NFL draft status exemplifies the dedication and talent present in collegiate athletics.
