Seven Arrested as Dodgers Fans Celebrate World Series Victory
Thousands of fans took to the streets of Los Angeles on October 28, 2023, following the Dodgers’ thrilling victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the World Series. The Dodgers secured their second consecutive championship title, resulting in jubilant celebrations that drew significant attention from local law enforcement.
In anticipation of the large crowds, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued a citywide Tactical Alert around 17:45 local time, well before the game concluded at approximately 21:15. As fans rejoiced, fireworks lit up the night sky shortly after the final play, which saw Mookie Betts execute a game-ending double play, solidifying the Dodgers’ victory.
As the celebration escalated, the LAPD reported several incidents that required intervention. Officers issued multiple dispersal orders and deployed less-than-lethal munitions after witnessing what they described as “industrial-size fireworks” being directed at both the crowd and police personnel. These actions came in response to escalating tensions among the revelers, which included street takeovers and other disturbances.
The LAPD confirmed that seven individuals were arrested during the chaotic celebrations, though the specific reasons for their detainment and the charges they may face remain unclear. During a news conference on the afternoon of October 29, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated that some incidents involved vandalism and destruction of property. He emphasized the importance of safety, urging those planning to attend the championship parade and related events at Dodger Stadium on October 30 to celebrate responsibly.
The Dodgers’ recent triumph marks their place in history as back-to-back World Series champions, a feat not accomplished since the New York Yankees’ dominance from 1998 to 2000. As fans continue to celebrate this momentous occasion, the LAPD remains vigilant to ensure public safety and order in the coming days.
