Red Bull’s Helmut Marko Departure Sparks Debate on Tsunoda’s Future
Helmut Marko’s recent departure from Red Bull Racing has ignited discussions about the future of Yuki Tsunoda in Formula 1. Known for his uncompromising decision-making, Marko’s influence peaked during his final season, notably impacting driver selections. In a significant move, Red Bull replaced seven-time Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo with rising star Liam Lawson in late 2024.
Following a tumultuous season, Lawson was promoted to the main team after Sergio Perez’s contract was terminated. However, his tenure was brief, lasting just two races before Yuki Tsunoda took the wheel. Tsunoda, who debuted in 2021, struggled to make a lasting impression despite participating in 22 Grands Prix this season.
Richard Wood, who has closely observed Red Bull’s driver dynamics over the past two years, expressed support for Tsunoda’s position in F1. He noted that the 25-year-old ended the season ranked 17th with a total of 33 points, highlighting that Tsunoda is “loved by everyone in the team.” Wood emphasized that Tsunoda’s talent warrants his presence on the grid, even as he transitions to a reserve driver role with Red Bull for the 2026 season.
“The good thing about Yuki is that he has a pure nature that allows him to say good things are good and bad things are bad,” Wood stated. “Sometimes those words were very harsh, but I understand that this is because he never slacked off and always gave it his all, no matter the situation. Yuki was unlucky in many races, and there were many where the results were not what he wanted. It’s a shame because he could have achieved much better results.”
Despite the affection from his team, Tsunoda’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain. Ted Kravitz has raised concerns about his prospects of returning to the grid. Tsunoda’s previous relationship with Honda played a significant role in his placement at Red Bull, yet with Honda now powering Aston Martin, that connection has weakened.
Aston Martin is reportedly considering high-profile drivers like Max Verstappen to replace Fernando Alonso, further complicating Tsunoda’s chances of staying with the team. Current seats at Aston Martin appear secure for the foreseeable future, particularly as Lawrence Stroll, the team owner, does not seem inclined to make changes to his son Lance Stroll’s position.
Looking ahead, Tsunoda may find opportunities with teams like Alpine and Haas, which could potentially have seats available before the 2027 season. As he navigates this transitional phase, Tsunoda remains hopeful for a return to racing, with Wood believing strongly in his capabilities.
As Formula 1 continues to evolve, the impact of Marko’s exit and the subsequent fate of drivers like Tsunoda will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the sport in the coming years.
