Michigan Wolverines Lose Key Player Justice Haynes to Transfer Portal
The Michigan Wolverines experienced a significant setback when running back Justice Haynes announced his entry into the NCAA transfer portal. This move comes shortly after the Wolverines appointed Kyle Whittingham, former head coach of the Utah Utes, as their new head coach following the dismissal of Sherrone Moore.
Michigan’s coaching change took place after the regular-season finale, when the program decided to part ways with Moore for cause. Just a few weeks later, in late December 2023, the Wolverines secured Whittingham on a five-year contract, aiming to revitalize the team ahead of the upcoming season.
While Whittingham has made headlines by retaining star quarterback Bryce Underwood, the loss of Haynes poses a considerable challenge. Haynes, who transferred to Michigan from Alabama before the 2023 season, announced his decision to explore other opportunities after speculation suggested he might declare for the NFL Draft.
In a heartfelt statement, Haynes expressed his gratitude toward the University of Michigan, stating, “This place has shaped me in ways that go far beyond football. I’ve grown as an athlete and as a person, learned from incredible coaches, and built relationships that I’ll carry with me for life.” He continued, “After reflection, prayer and heartfelt conversations with my family, I’ve made the decision to close my chapter at the University of Michigan.”
During the 2023 season, Haynes showcased his talent on the field despite suffering an injury, participating in seven games and rushing for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also contributed with 13 receptions for 50 yards. His impressive performance had made him a valuable asset to the Wolverines.
Early reports suggest that Haynes may be considering a transfer to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, where he could potentially receive an unverified offer worth $2.5 million. This would represent a significant financial increase from the $1.2 million he earned while at Michigan.
As the Wolverines adapt to their new coaching leadership under Whittingham, the team will need to strategically navigate the challenges posed by the transfer portal. The potential loss of key players like Haynes underscores the competitive landscape of college football as teams seek to build strong rosters.
With the transfer portal now open, Michigan will be focused on not only retaining its current talent but also exploring new opportunities to bolster their lineup ahead of the next season.
