Manchester City Signs Marc Guehi for £20 Million from Crystal Palace
Manchester City has officially signed defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for a transfer fee of £20 million. The England international’s arrival strengthens a Manchester City backline that has faced injuries to key players, notably Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias. Guehi’s experience in the Premier League is expected to be vital as the team seeks success across multiple competitions in the second half of the season.
The transfer marks Manchester City’s second significant signing of January, following their acquisition of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £64 million. The 26-year-old forward has made an immediate impact, scoring in consecutive matches against Exeter City and Newcastle United. With the club still competing for silverware in four different tournaments, the addition of Guehi comes at a crucial time.
Details of the Transfer Agreement
Guehi has committed to a five-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2030-31 season. Along with the transfer fee, Crystal Palace included a percentage sell-on clause, although the specifics of this clause have not been disclosed. Guehi’s reported weekly wage stands at approximately £300,000, reflecting his status as a sought-after defender in English football.
The player expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City, stating, “I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player. This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career.” Guehi highlighted the opportunity to develop further in what he describes as “the best club in England,” and expressed eagerness to contribute to the team’s success.
Official Reactions and Future Expectations
Following the completion of the deal, Hugo Viana, Manchester City’s sporting director, praised Guehi’s abilities. He remarked, “It’s clear Marc has been one of the best defenders in English football for quite some time now, so we are absolutely delighted to bring him to Manchester City.” Viana emphasized Guehi’s leadership qualities and exceptional defensive skills, noting that he is entering the prime years of his career.
Guehi will don the number 15 jersey at Manchester City, a number previously associated with notable players such as Eliaquim Mangala and Jesus Navas.
As for Guehi’s debut, he will not be eligible to participate in the UEFA Champions League until the knockout stages, which means he will miss the upcoming group-stage match against Bodo/Glimt. The defender is expected to take the field for the first time against Wolves later this month, as the team aims for their first Premier League victory of 2026.
While Manchester City is not anticipated to make further signings during this transfer window, potential departures from the squad may influence their activity in the remaining weeks. The club’s focus remains on leveraging their recent acquisitions to maintain competitiveness in all fronts as the season progresses.
