Lindsey Vonn Triumphs at St. Moritz, Secures 83rd World Cup Victory
Lindsey Vonn showcased her extraordinary talent and resilience on the slopes, claiming her 83rd World Cup victory during the downhill race in St. Moritz on December 8, 2023. The former Vail resident, widely regarded as the best female downhill racer, dominated the race with a stunning time of 1:29.63, finishing nearly a second ahead of her closest competitor.
Vonn’s performance was particularly remarkable as she was the only racer to break the 1:30 barrier, demonstrating her skill and determination. She started 16th on the course but surged ahead, regaining time in the middle section after an average start. Austrian racer Magdalena Egger finished in second place with a time of 1:30.61, trailing Vonn by 0.98 seconds. Just behind her, Mirjam Puchner, also from Austria, secured third place, finishing 1.16 seconds off Vonn’s pace.
In a press conference prior to the race, Vonn expressed confidence in her physical condition, stating, “I’m physically in possibly the best shape I’ve ever been in.” She attributed part of her success to the off-season training, during which she gained 12 pounds of muscle. Vonn also sought guidance from Norwegian downhill legend Aksel Lund Svindal, who believed she could return to the top of the field even in her 40s.
This victory marks Vonn’s 44th downhill win and adds to her impressive tally of World Cup victories, now totaling 83. She currently ranks third on the all-time wins list, trailing only Ingemar Stenmark with 86 wins and Mikaela Shiffrin, who leads with 104 victories.
Vonn’s continued excellence in skiing not only highlights her individual achievements but also serves as an inspiration for athletes around the world, demonstrating that persistence and dedication can lead to remarkable comebacks, regardless of age.
As the season progresses, Vonn’s performance at St. Moritz sets a promising tone for her future races, as fans and competitors alike eagerly await her next challenge on the slopes.
