Following a disappointing Christmas Day loss to the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick expressed frustration regarding the team’s offensive organization. The defeat extended the Lakers’ losing streak to three games, prompting Redick to seek improvements in defensive clarity, role clarity, and particularly offensive structure.

Struggles in Offensive Execution

Despite a modest rebound with a 2-1 record in their subsequent three games, Redick indicated that the Lakers have not made sufficient progress in their offensive organization. “No, not at all,” Redick stated when asked if he noticed any improvements. “I do a lot of joysticking over there on the sideline,” he added, highlighting his frustration with the lack of execution.

During a recent home victory against the Memphis Grizzlies, Redick called for a specific play known as “Away Toss.” However, the play was not executed as intended, leading to further concerns about the team’s readiness. “We bring it up the left side, I want so-and-so in it. This was after a deadball; it wasn’t like I was calling it on the fly,” Redick explained. “And we bring it up that side and the person I want in the Away Toss isn’t over there.”

Accountability Among Players

Redick noted that the Lakers struggled with in-game adjustments, particularly after timeouts. Against the Grizzlies, the team ran 12 plays following timeouts, but only executed four correctly. “We tried to run two of them again, but still didn’t run them correctly,” he remarked. This lack of execution is particularly perplexing for Redick, who recalled his own experience as a player, stating he rarely forgot plays during his 15-season NBA career.

Players also acknowledged their responsibility for the miscues. Forward Jake LaRavia reflected on the team’s struggles, stating, “Everyone’s locked in on the whiteboard in a timeout, and it’s on the players to go out to the court and then execute it.” LaRavia emphasized the need for individual accountability and a clear understanding of each player’s role during plays.

As the Lakers prepare to host the Grizzlies again on December 31 at the Crypto.com Arena, the team is focused on rectifying these issues. With a growing urgency to end their losing streak and regain confidence, the upcoming match will serve as a critical test of their ability to execute under pressure.

As the season progresses, Redick’s emphasis on improving offensive organization could be key to the Lakers’ success, especially as they aim to solidify their playoff position amid the competitive landscape of the NBA.
