Jingle Bell Beach Run Returns for Festive 3.1-Mile Race
The streets of Kailua-Kona will come alive this Sunday with the return of the 17th Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run. Participants will gather at Coconut Grove Marketplace for a festive 3.1-mile run/walk that promises a blend of competition and holiday spirit. This year’s event is set to kick off at 7:30 a.m. on December 21, 2023, offering something for everyone, from seasoned runners aiming for personal bests to families enjoying a festive outing.
The run will begin in front of Coconut Grove Marketplace, with participants heading north toward Kailua Pier. Runners will experience scenic views of Kailua Bay and the historic village before making a U-turn and continuing south towards the Sea Village. The route concludes back at the marketplace, creating a festive atmosphere along the way.
In addition to the primary race, the event will include the Santa’s Keiki Dash, which starts at 8:30 a.m.. This segment is free for children aged six and under and features races of 50 yards, 100 yards, and 200 yards, ensuring young participants can join in the holiday fun.
Costume enthusiasts will also have their moment in the spotlight with a competitive Costume Contest, where awards will be given to the top three most creative outfits. Runners in the main race will compete for overall prizes in addition to age-group divisions, enhancing the event’s community spirit.
The Jingle Bell Beach Run has a history of impressive performances, with current records held by former Canadian athletes. Matthew Travaglini set the men’s record in 2019 with a remarkable time of 14 minutes and 40 seconds, while Bridget Pyke, a five-time women’s champion, recorded a time of 17 minutes and 27 seconds that same year.
This year, the run will also support local charities, with proceeds benefiting PATH (People for Active Transportation Hawaii) and the Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona. Both organizations are committed to youth programs and community activities, making the event not only a celebration of fitness but also a means to give back to the local community.
Longtime participant and digital creator Kawika Singson expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “In my opinion, the best, most fun 5K race on the island is the Jingle Bell Beach Run!” Singson also noted that the season premiere of his show, “Adventures with Kawika,” will coincide with the event, airing at 7:30 p.m. on December 21.
Registration for the race remains open until 2:00 p.m. HST on December 19, 2023, with late registration and bib number pickup scheduled for December 20 at Coconut Grove Marketplace from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Please note that there will be no registration available on race day.
