Jaguars’ Grant Udinski Emerges as Hot Head Coach Prospect

Grant Udinski, the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, is gaining attention as a potential head coach candidate in the upcoming hiring cycle. Although he will not reach the age of 30 until next month, his innovative approach to coaching has made him a name to watch. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, NFL teams are increasingly interested in younger, creative offensive minds, following the success of coaches like Sean McVay, who was hired by the Los Angeles Rams just before his 31st birthday in 2017.

The trend of seeking out dynamic young coaches has led to a variety of outcomes across the league. Teams are searching for the “next McVay,” and Udinski may fit that mold. He was described as a “rising star” by Liam Coen, Jacksonville’s first-year head coach, when he joined the Jaguars’ staff in February.

Udinski began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Baylor University in 2019. He later followed Matt Rhule to the Carolina Panthers in 2020. After a difficult period in Carolina, Udinski transitioned to the Minnesota Vikings in 2022, where he became the assistant quarterbacks coach and later, the assistant offensive coordinator. During his tenure with the Vikings, he contributed to two notable seasons led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, despite one being marred by injury. He was also instrumental in the surprising performance of Sam Darnold in the 2024 season.

Currently, under Udinski’s guidance, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has shown signs of improvement, contributing to the team’s strong performance this season. With a record of 9-4, Jacksonville sits atop the AFC South, indicating a competitive edge in the league. While Lawrence’s individual statistics may not reflect the same level of success, the overall progress of the team has kept Udinski’s profile elevated.

As Jones notes, part of Udinski’s appeal lies in the current shortage of standout offensive-minded candidates for head coaching positions in 2026. His youth, combined with the fact that he does not directly call the Jaguars’ offensive plays—responsibility that lies with Coen—may raise concerns for some teams. Nevertheless, even if he does not secure a head coaching position this season, his name is likely to surface in future coaching discussions, similar to his experience in the offensive coordinator circuit in 2025, where he interviewed with five different clubs.

Udinski’s trajectory in the coaching world underscores a growing trend towards valuing innovative, youthful leadership in the NFL. As teams continue to adapt and evolve, individuals like Udinski could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the league.
