Hamilton Braves Rally Falls Short Against Winters Warriors
The Hamilton High School football team staged a remarkable comeback in the Northern Section Division IV championship game on November 26, 2025, but ultimately fell short against the Winters Warriors, losing 32-29. The Braves, who trailed 21-0 early in the game, scored 23 unanswered points in the second half at a packed Dr. Sellers Field, yet could not secure their first section title since 2008.
Hamilton entered the match riding a strong 12-game winning streak, seeking redemption after a previous season’s blowout loss to Winters. Senior defensive end Adam Simson expressed pride in his team’s resilience, stating, “I’ve lost here three years in a row, and this team fought like no other team I’ve ever played on. I would go to war for each and every one of these guys.”
The game began with a swift offensive display from the No. 1-seeded Warriors. Winters’ dual-threat quarterback Lane Brown opened the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run on just the third play from scrimmage. Shortly after, Brown connected with Luke Felsen for a 44-yard touchdown, putting the Braves down 14-0.
Hamilton struggled initially, managing only a brief attack before a devastating interception return by Winters’ Joe Hawkins resulted in a 97-yard touchdown, extending their lead to 21-0. Despite this setback, Hamilton’s defense sparked hope when Case Porter intercepted a Brown pass and returned it for a 75-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 21-6 after a blocked extra point.
The Warriors maintained their dominance, entering halftime with a 24-6 lead thanks to a 27-yard field goal by Felsen. Yet, the second half saw a shift in momentum as Hamilton’s coaches rallied the team with inspiration.
The Braves opened the second half with renewed vigor. They capitalized on an early fourth down, drawing Winters offsides to retain possession. Kayden Strong, the Braves’ quarterback, orchestrated a successful drive culminating in a 2-yard touchdown run by Ilan Davis, narrowing the gap to 24-12.
Simson noted the motivational impact of their coach, Aaron Elliott, stating, “Coach gave us a speech at halftime, and we rallied and came back.” The momentum intensified as Hamilton’s defense again struck, with Cesar Leal returning an interception for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to just four points at 24-20.
With Hamilton gaining confidence, Strong’s next interception of Brown set up a field goal by Mateo Cardenas, bringing them within one point at 24-23. The Braves then took their first lead of the game when Strong connected with Austin Studybaker for a 31-yard touchdown, making it 29-24 with 7:17 remaining.
However, Winters quickly answered back. Brown connected with Felsen for a decisive 79-yard touchdown, reclaiming the lead at 30-29. A series of unfortunate events struck Hamilton when Strong exited the game due to a shoulder injury. The ensuing drive was hampered by a high snap that resulted in a safety, extending Winters’ lead to 32-29 and diminishing Hamilton’s chances for a comeback.
Despite the loss, Hamilton finished the season with a commendable record of 12-1. Coach Elliott reflected on the season, recognizing the impact of the senior class: “This class brought some respect back and some pride to Hamilton football.”
The brave effort by the Hamilton Braves demonstrated their growth and tenacity, leaving an impression on the community and the fans as they look ahead to future seasons.
