Giants Near Deal to Hire John Harbaugh as Head Coach
The New York Giants are reportedly finalizing a deal to hire John Harbaugh as their next head coach, marking a significant move for the franchise. According to multiple sources, negotiations have intensified, and indications suggest that Harbaugh could soon become the 24th head coach in Giants history. Although no contract has been signed yet, discussions are ongoing regarding the financial terms, which could reach upwards of $20 million per year.
Intensive Pursuit of a Proven Leader
This development follows the Giants’ strategic efforts to secure Harbaugh after his departure from the Baltimore Ravens on January 6, 2026, where he spent 18 successful years. Upon identifying Harbaugh as their top candidate to replace Brian Daboll, the Giants wasted no time in courting him. They arranged for Harbaugh to meet key organizational figures, including general manager Joe Schoen and co-owner Steve Tisch, during an in-person interview at the team’s facility in East Rutherford.
Harbaugh’s visit included discussions with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, whose potential is seen as an attractive aspect of the position. Although he left without a signed contract, negotiations reportedly gained momentum overnight, with the Giants keen to prevent him from engaging with other interested teams like the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.
Overcoming Challenges within the Organization
The potential hiring of Harbaugh is seen as a vital step for a Giants franchise that has struggled with consistency, having cycled through four head coaches since 2017. Reports have clarified that concerns regarding friction between Harbaugh and Schoen were unfounded; in fact, Schoen has maintained regular communication with Harbaugh’s camp. Even former coach Daboll advocated for the collaborative nature of the organization, suggesting a welcoming environment for Harbaugh.
The Giants’ pursuit involved significant input from their leadership team. Senior personnel consultant Chris Mara met with Harbaugh in Baltimore, while franchise legends Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning reached out to reinforce the organization’s appeal.
The addition of Harbaugh could provide the Giants with a much-needed stability. His impressive coaching record includes a regular-season win-loss tally of 180-113 and a victory at Super Bowl XLVII. Known for his leadership style and experience, Harbaugh’s presence could revitalize a fan base eager for success, especially after a disappointing 2-8 start to the previous season and a 3-14 finish the year before.
As the Giants work to finalize the details, the excitement surrounding Harbaugh’s potential arrival grows. Although there is still much to iron out regarding the specific contract figures, sources indicate that the momentum is decidedly in New York’s favor. The Giants have committed significant resources to this pursuit, and a formal announcement is anticipated once the final terms are agreed upon.
