Eagles Coaches Back Jalen Hurts Amid Frustration Claims
PHILADELPHIA — In a strong defense of quarterback Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed recent reports claiming frustration within the team regarding Hurts’ performance. During an interview on 94.1 WIP on October 10, 2023, Sirianni asserted, “I’m not frustrated with him. He goes out there and does his job each week and does a great job of putting us in position to win games.”
The comments came in response to allegations made by NFL broadcaster Derrick Gunn and journalist Dianna Russini of The Athletic, who suggested that several coaches and players are dissatisfied with Hurts’ approach, particularly against zone coverage. According to Russini, multiple offensive players feel that Hurts has become hesitant in tight situations, opting for checkdowns rather than exploiting open opportunities downfield.
As the Eagles rank 30th in the league for pass attempts this season, frustrations are reportedly growing among pass catchers. Russini noted, “Any top receiver I’ve covered in this league has said the same thing: They spend hours getting open. When the ball doesn’t come their way, frustration follows.”
In a separate discussion, Gunn elaborated on these sentiments during an appearance on Seth Joyner’s podcast. He indicated that Hurts tends to revert to his own style rather than the offensive strategies outlined by the coaching staff. Gunn’s critique suggested that Hurts often hesitates, disrupting the timing and rhythm of the offense. “It’s frustrating in a lot of ways to the coaching staff and to the players,” he remarked.
Despite the criticisms, offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo defended Hurts following a challenging 16-9 victory over the Lions on October 8, 2023. “I thought Jalen played well,” Patullo stated. He highlighted the importance of ball security, noting that Hurts took care of the football, which is a top priority for the team. Patullo acknowledged that the game could have felt different had the Eagles converted their red zone opportunities into touchdowns, instead of settling for field goals.
The Eagles’ offense has faced scrutiny this season, with only a few standout performances against the Vikings, the Giants, and the Rams. Wide receiver A.J. Brown has openly expressed his frustrations, while running back Saquan Barkley emphasized the need for the team to “get on the same page.” As rookie offensive coordinator, Patullo has faced criticism, and these reports, if accurate, place an increased responsibility on Hurts to adhere to the designed offensive plays.
In addition to the quarterback discussions, Sirianni updated the status of All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson, who is dealing with a Lisfranc foot injury. The injury could potentially sideline him for 4 to 6 weeks. Sirianni noted, “I know that he’ll do everything he can do to get back as quick as he possibly can,” but refrained from providing a specific timeline for Johnson’s return.
With Fred Johnson and Matt Pryor likely to step in, the Eagles will need to adjust their strategy as they navigate the upcoming games without one of their key offensive linemen.
As the Eagles prepare for their next challenges, the spotlight remains on Hurts and the offense, with the team hoping to address recent frustrations and enhance their performance on the field.
