Dee-Mack Girls Basketball Captures First State Title with 49-34 Victory
In a historic achievement, the Deer Creek-Mackinaw girls basketball team clinched their first state championship by defeating Mt. Pulaski 49-34 on March 9, 2024, at CEFCU Arena. Senior forward Dalia Dejesus played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring 16 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and providing five assists and six blocks during the game.
Dejesus stood confidently at the free-throw line in the final moments, soaking in the cheers from the crowd. “I was, honestly, just trying to take it all in,” she reflected after the game. The moment marked a fitting conclusion to her impressive high school career, as she made two crucial free throws to seal the victory.
Dominance on the Court
The match showcased Dejesus’s tenacity, particularly during the second half, where she scored eight points in the third quarter. This surge helped overcome a three-point halftime deficit, allowing Dee-Mack to take control of the game. Coach Ryan McVickers of Mt. Pulaski acknowledged Dejesus’s talent, stating, “We knew coming in that Dalia is a really, really, really good basketball player. Yes, that was our main goal – we have to stop her.”
Despite facing a tough 1-2-2 defense from Mt. Pulaski, Dejesus adapted her strategy. “You have to work a little bit harder,” she said, emphasizing the importance of playing aggressively in the paint. Her determination paid off, contributing significantly to Dee-Mack’s historic win.
Early in the game, Dee-Mack established a strong lead with a series of three-pointers from players Riley Durbin and Jaelyn Nunley, who together scored a total of four 3s, pushing the score to 12-4. Durbin, who finished with 11 points, noted, “Making that 3-pointer calmed my nerves. It gave me an extra boost.” This early momentum, however, was challenged as Mt. Pulaski rallied back, scoring 15 of the next 19 points to take a 19-16 lead into halftime.
Turning Point and Teamwork
Coach Joni Nightingale recognized the need for a halftime pep talk, as her team struggled with shooting just 27.3 percent in the first half. “These girls are locked in. We’re not strangers to being down at the half,” she stated confidently. The halftime adjustments proved effective, igniting a resurgence in the second half.
Dee-Mack’s teamwork shone through, with Nunley also contributing 11 points and Kate Schmidgall adding six points and seven rebounds. The team’s ability to distribute the ball was evident, as they recorded 13 assists on 16 field goals. Notably, Alyson Murphy led Mt. Pulaski with 16 points, yet her efforts were not enough to overcome Dee-Mack’s balanced attack.
Ultimately, the victory represents a culmination of hard work and dedication for the Dee-Mack basketball program, finishing the season with an impressive record of 34-3. Nightingale expressed her pride, stating, “It feels like hard work paid off. These girls poured so much into themselves and played for each other.” This triumphant moment not only celebrates the team’s success but also marks a significant milestone for the community they represent.
As the team celebrated their first state title, it was clear that this victory was a testament to their perseverance and commitment to excellence. The Dee-Mack girls’ basketball team has etched its name in the annals of state championship history, inspiring future generations of athletes.
