Cardinals Surge Late to Defeat SW Illinois 77-58 in NJCAA Clash

The Mineral Area men’s basketball team overcame a challenging first half to secure a 77-58 victory over SW Illinois on March 15, 2024, at home in Park Hills. After trailing by as much as 10 points, the Cardinals found their rhythm in the closing minutes, showcasing a strong defensive effort that limited their opponents to just 15 points in the final 17 minutes of play.

The first half presented numerous difficulties for Mineral Area. SW Illinois disrupted their offensive flow, forcing the Cardinals into a cold shooting performance from the perimeter. The Blue Storm capitalized on this, establishing a 37-33 lead at halftime. Giullo Rigato scored two crucial field goals early in the second half, extending the SW Illinois lead, while Mineral Area faced foul trouble with their center Ngundeng Ruey.

In a pivotal shift, the Cardinals employed a smaller lineup that ignited a dominant 16-2 run. This surge propelled them from a deficit to a commanding lead, with standout performances from key players. Nassir Binion led the charge with 19 points and three steals, while Maki Joyner contributed 15 points off the bench, both playing vital roles in the comeback.

Binion’s dynamic play included a steal that set up a fast break, demonstrating his ability to create scoring opportunities under pressure. Edwon Duling Jr., who previously recorded 10 assists in a game against Lake Land, added to the scoring with a crucial three-pointer, marking the first long-range shot for the Cardinals since an early attempt by Carl Claxton.

SW Illinois briefly regained the lead at 52-50, but the Cardinals responded emphatically, outscoring their opponents 27-6 in the final nine minutes. Joyner’s driving layup put Mineral Area ahead permanently, followed by a creative spinning bank shot on consecutive possessions. He also assisted on a transition slam by Nazir Allen, solidifying the Cardinals’ advantage at 64-56 with just over five minutes remaining.

The game was marked by a notable exchange of words that resulted in a double technical foul between Duling and SW Illinois’s DaQuan Little. Nevertheless, the Cardinals continued to build on their momentum, with Binion converting an important three-point play that further extended their lead.

Mineral Area’s balanced scoring reflected their collective effort, with Nazir Allen posting 12 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks. Duling finished with 11 points and six assists, while Iziah Purvey contributed eight points and two steals. The Cardinals capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, converting 19 of 27 attempts, illustrating their effectiveness at the charity stripe.

Overall, the matchup showcased the resilience of the Mineral Area team, particularly in the second half, as they adjusted their strategy and took control of the game. This victory improves their record to 10-5, while SW Illinois falls to 6-7. The two teams previously met earlier in the season, with Mineral Area also securing a win, 77-61.
