Buffalo Sabres Make Major Change: GM Jarmo Kekalainen Fires Karmanos
In a significant shift for the Buffalo Sabres, Jarmo Kekalainen dismissed Jason Karmanos from his position as associate general manager on Saturday. This decision marks Kekalainen’s first major action since assuming control of the team’s hockey operations. Karmanos had been with the organization for five seasons, primarily overseeing the operations of the Rochester Americans, the Sabres’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.
Karmanos, the son of Peter Karmanos, owner of the Hartford Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes, began his career in professional hockey with the Whalers in 1998. Over his tenure, he celebrated two Stanley Cup victories while working with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His departure comes as the Sabres continue to struggle, currently holding the longest playoff drought in the NHL at 14 seasons, with their last postseason appearance in 2011.
Leadership Changes Amid Struggles
The announcement follows the recent firing of former general manager Kevyn Adams, who was let go just a few days prior. Owner Terry Pegula appointed Kekalainen as the new general manager, entrusting him with the task of revitalizing a franchise in dire need of improvement. Under Kekalainen’s leadership, the Sabres are currently at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, and the prospect of extending their playoff drought to 15 seasons looms large.
In a statement regarding Karmanos’ termination, Kekalainen expressed gratitude for Karmanos’ contributions, saying, “We thank Jason for his contributions to the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans and wish him the best in his future endeavors.” This statement underscores the organization’s intent to move forward and reshape its management structure as they seek to build a more competitive team.
A New Direction for the Sabres
Kekalainen, 59, brings over a decade of experience to his new role, having served as general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2013 to 2024. His extensive background in the NHL, coupled with a strong track record, positions him as a pivotal figure in the Sabres’ quest to emerge from their prolonged slump.
The Sabres’ recent performance has been a source of frustration for fans and stakeholders alike. With the current roster struggling to find success, Kekalainen’s initial focus will likely center on evaluating personnel and making strategic adjustments to enhance team performance. As he embarks on this new chapter, the hope is that his experience and vision can reinvigorate a franchise that has faced significant challenges in recent years.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Kekalainen and how he chooses to reshape the Sabres. The pressure to break the playoff drought is palpable, and swift action will be necessary to regain the trust of a dedicated fan base that has endured years of disappointment.
