Brandon Sanderson Unveils New Cosmere Novel “The Fires of December”
Brandon Sanderson has officially announced the upcoming release of a new novel within his expansive Cosmere universe, titled The Fires of December. The announcement was made during the annual fan convention, Dragonsteel Nexus, held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. The crowd erupted in cheers as Sanderson revealed the book, reassuring fans that the tradition of annual Cosmere novels would continue into 2026.
During the event, Sanderson addressed the audience, saying, “For a number of years now, we’ve had a Cosmere novel every year,” referencing the high expectations from his readers. He added, “And people started to ask me, ‘Brandon, well, 2026, where’s the Cosmere novel?’” With excitement, he confirmed, “We’ve got one,” before unveiling the novel’s cover art.
Connecting to the Cosmere Universe
The Fires of December will be categorized as part of Sanderson’s “special projects” line and will further explore the character of Hoid. Sanderson described it as part of a series that connects to previous works, including Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. He shared his enthusiasm for the new narrative, stating, “I really enjoyed writing those books, and I thought, ‘There are more terrible things that have happened to Hoid in the Cosmere.’”
The novel will delve into the misadventures of Hoid, a recurring character in Sanderson’s works. Sanderson conveyed that the book would recount various tribulations faced by Hoid, who narrates his experiences to the audience. During the announcement, he engaged fans by reading excerpts from the first two chapters, which focus on the character December. He promised that the reading text would be shared with fans through his newsletter and website at a later date.
Release Plans for Fans
While an official release date for The Fires of December has not yet been confirmed, Sanderson indicated that the book would be available in multiple formats next year. The novel will be included in his upcoming “secret projects” crowdfunding campaign set for March 2024. For fans who opt not to engage in the crowdfunding, Sanderson assured that the book would be published by Tor and aim for a release in time for the Christmas season in 2026.
This announcement adds to the excitement surrounding Sanderson’s growing body of work, especially as his previous projects have garnered significant acclaim. As fans eagerly await more details, The Fires of December promises to be a compelling addition to the beloved Cosmere series.
