Sea Otters Disrupt Surfing at Santa Cruz’s Steamer Lane
On March 6, 2024, two incidents at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, California, involved sea otters commandeering surfboards, alarming local surfers. The first incident occurred when Isabella Orduna, a 21-year-old college student, felt a sudden nip on her foot while she was surfing. Startled, she quickly fell into the water, only to find a “big, fuzzy, chunky bear of an otter” on her board upon resurfacing.
The next day, another surfer experienced a similar encounter, further highlighting the peculiar behavior of these marine mammals. This is not the first time such incidents have occurred at this popular surf spot. In 2023, a female sea otter known as 841 gained notoriety for climbing aboard surfboards and evading capture, raising concerns about interactions between humans and wildlife.
Experts suggest that it is unclear whether 841 is responsible for the recent occurrences. If it is her, this could be seen as a continuation of her disruptive behavior. Alternatively, it is possible that a different otter has developed a newfound affinity for surfing.
With an increase in both human aquatic sports enthusiasts and a resurgent population of marine mammals, the situation underscores the ongoing need to manage potential conflicts in their shared environment.
Local residents and officials are urging surfers and ocean-goers to maintain a safe distance from sea otters. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife emphasizes that while these animals are playful, their behavior can be unpredictable, especially when they feel threatened or cornered.
The Marine Mammal Protection Act mandates that all marine mammals, including sea otters, be treated with respect and care. Consequently, it is crucial for the public to adhere to guidelines designed to protect both human participants in ocean sports and the wildlife inhabiting these waters.
As the community grapples with these unusual encounters, the importance of coexistence between humans and wildlife remains a pressing issue. Surfers are encouraged to stay alert and avoid close interactions with sea otters to ensure the safety of both parties.
