Record-breaking Winter Heat Engulfs U.S. Amid Eastern Chill
The winter of 2023-2024 has set remarkable records across the United States, as the country experiences a stark contrast between the eastern and western regions. While the eastern half faced persistent cold temperatures and snow, the western states recorded unprecedented warmth. In fact, nine states experienced their hottest winter on record, while five states recorded their second-hottest, as heat waves exacerbated drought conditions and raised the risk of wildfires.
Despite the bitter cold felt in parts of the east, this winter was the second-warmest on record for the contiguous United States in the past 131 years. According to climate scientist Daniel Swain from the California Institute for Water Resources, the unusual weather patterns can be attributed to long-term climate change. Swain noted, “The grass is regreening for again for the second time this winter,” highlighting the unusual climatic shifts.
For much of the eastern U.S., winter temperatures were around average, with only eight states recording below-average temperatures. However, these eastern states ranked in the lower third of historical records, underscoring the significant variations across the country. The fundamental driver behind these contrasting weather conditions is climate change, which has made winter the fastest-warming season.
An analysis by the nonprofit organization Climate Central revealed that the coldest winter temperatures today are, on average, 7 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 4 degrees Celsius) warmer than they were in 1970. This shift means that when cold weather does arrive, it feels more severe than it did in the past, as people have become less acclimated to such conditions. This phenomenon is similar to how temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 16 degrees Celsius100 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 38 degrees Celsius) in various locations. As communities prepare for potential impacts, the urgency of addressing climate change remains at the forefront of discussions surrounding weather and environmental sustainability.
