Research from Stanford University has unveiled significant developments in three critical areas: disease prevention using African catfish, the mapping of mantle earthquakes, and insights into math learning disabilities in children. These studies aim to address pressing global challenges and enhance educational methods.

Catfish as a Solution for Disease Prevention

In Senegal, efforts are underway to combat the transmission of schistosomiasis, a debilitating disease linked to freshwater snails. Giulio De Leo, a professor at Stanford’s Department of Earth Systems and a senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, leads a project that aims to reduce the snail population in rice fields by introducing African catfish as natural predators.

Schistosomiasis, transmitted through contaminated water, poses significant health risks, particularly to rice farmers. The parasite enters the skin when individuals wade into infested waters, leading to severe health complications over time. With funding from the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, De Leo’s research suggests that the introduction of catfish could not only lower snail populations but also enhance rice yields and farmer income. Early findings indicate a promising reduction in snail numbers and improved farming outcomes. Local organizations will collaborate with researchers to bolster farming practices in the region. De Leo emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “With the guidance of our partners in Senegal, we’re demonstrating a proof of concept to scale adoption.”

Mapping Earthquake Risks in the Earth’s Mantle

In a groundbreaking study, Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability has produced the first global map of earthquakes occurring in the Earth’s mantle. This research, led by Shiqi “Axel” Wang, former Ph.D. student in geophysics, aims to enhance understanding of earthquake patterns that could impact seismic activity closer to the Earth’s surface.

The research team analyzed data from over 46,000 earthquakes recorded since 1990. Of these, only 459 were classified as mantle earthquakes, highlighting the rarity of such events. Researchers are keen to uncover why these earthquakes occur at specific locations and times, despite their generally low risk of causing surface shaking. Wang noted, “Continental mantle earthquakes might be part of an inherently interconnected earthquake cycle, both from the crust and also the upper mantle.” This study could provide valuable insights into earthquake risks that affect populated areas.

Insights into Math Learning Disabilities

Recent findings from the Stanford School of Medicine, published on February 9, 2024, in the Journal of Neuroscience, reveal that children with math learning disabilities approach problems differently, even if they arrive at the same answers. The study, which examined 87 second and third graders, included 34 students identified as having learning disabilities based on standardized test scores.

Researchers observed distinct brain activity patterns in students with math learning disabilities, particularly in regions responsible for focused attention and error-checking. Vinod Menon, the senior author of the study, emphasized the need for educational interventions that target not just numerical skills but also metacognitive processes, such as performance monitoring. This research highlights the potential for tailored approaches to support children struggling with math, addressing both their cognitive and emotional needs.

The findings from these three studies underscore the innovative research emerging from Stanford University and its potential to make meaningful contributions to health, environmental science, and education.
