Discover Baltimore’s Top Ceviche Spots: A Flavorful Journey
Ceviche lovers in Baltimore can rejoice as several local restaurants showcase this traditional dish with unique twists. A recent exploration by food enthusiast Yuyu Huang highlights the best ceviche offerings in the city, focusing on freshness, flavor, and presentation. The culinary journey included visits to Puerto 511, La Calle, and Clavel, each bringing distinct characteristics to the table.
Pleasant Dining at Puerto 511
At Puerto 511, diners can indulge in a fixed five-course menu that changes seasonally. During a visit in late August, the featured ceviche was Causa Acevichada, which combines marinated fish with mashed yellow potatoes and a vibrant sauce known as tiger’s milk. This sauce, crafted from citrus, garlic, and chili, elevates the dish with a refreshing tang.
The meal also included roasted veal heart, tamales, and a delightful dessert of ice cream. Each dish harmoniously incorporated fruity elements like tomatoes and pineapples, complementing the ceviche’s fresh white-flesh fish. Priced at $59 per person, the generous portions and homestyle ambience make it an ideal spot for gatherings with friends.
Aesthetic Delights at La Calle
Moving to La Calle, located in the scenic Inner Harbor, the atmosphere is both spacious and inviting. The open kitchen and warm lighting contribute to an enjoyable dining experience. Two ceviche options were sampled, with Ceviche del Día, the daily special, standing out for its tender tuna bathed in a creamy pink sauce, complemented by avocado.
The second option, Aguachile de la Pasión, while fresh, leaned too sour for the diners’ taste. Yet, the meal was salvaged with the splendid Barbacoa de Cordero, featuring well-seasoned lamb that fell apart effortlessly. Each person can expect to spend around $60 for a satisfying meal, making it suitable for both romantic evenings and small group outings. Reservations are recommended due to high demand.
Clavel: A Beloved Local Favorite
Clavel has garnered a reputation as a must-visit for food enthusiasts, especially for its ceviche offerings. Initially, the focus on tacos during a first visit left some doubts about the restaurant’s hype. However, a second visit proved transformative, showcasing the ceviches as the true stars of the menu.
The Salmon Crudo is a standout dish, featuring creamy salmon slices that offer a luxurious mouthfeel alongside a crispy tortilla for added texture. Diners also enjoyed the Campechana, a seafood medley with shrimp, octopus, and scallops, all enhanced by lime juice and served in an eye-catching goblet. Each meal in Clavel ranges from $50 to just over $80, with ample portions that satisfy.
The lively atmosphere, marked by laughter and conversation, makes Clavel an excellent choice for gatherings of friends or family, although wait times may extend from 20 to 40 minutes. The vibrant environment is a perfect backdrop for enjoying flavorful dishes.
Ceviche, a signature dish of Peru, reflects a rich cultural tapestry, blending coastal and mountain influences. Baltimore’s restaurants have embraced this culinary tradition, each adding their local flair and creating diverse flavor profiles. While this exploration highlights some of the best ceviche in the city, it only scratches the surface of the culinary treasures waiting to be discovered. Diners are encouraged to venture beyond ceviche to fully experience the unique offerings of these establishments.
