Celebrating the Life of Gary E. Kinnett: A Legacy Remembered
Gary E. Kinnett, aged 91, passed away on November 2, 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born in Los Angeles on June 24, 1934, to Donald Eugene and Florence Margaret (Taylor) Kinnett, Gary’s journey was marked by dedication to both his family and country.
After completing his education at University High School, Gary earned a degree from Occidental College, where he joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. His passion for service led him to the United States Navy, where he attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Following his graduation, he served on active duty for three and a half years before transitioning to the Reserves, ultimately retiring at the rank of Captain after an impressive 30 years of military service.
A Distinguished Legal Career
Gary’s academic pursuits continued at Boalt Hall Law School at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He married Shirley Ann Campbell from Seattle on December 21, 1959. The couple moved to Southern California post-law school, where Gary began his career at the California State Compensation Insurance Fund. He quickly joined the prestigious law firm of Parker, Stanbury, McGee, Peckham, Babcock, and Combs, becoming a partner within a few years.
Throughout his legal career, Gary was actively involved in various trial lawyer associations. This engagement fueled his love for travel, leading him and Shirley on numerous skiing trips, vacations that combined Navy duties with leisure, and family visits to Seattle. Their children, Julie and David, were central to their adventures, creating lasting memories together.
A Life of Service and Community Engagement
Gary’s commitment extended beyond his professional life. He was a devoted member of St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Stephens Minister. His leadership roles included presidency of the Seaview Residents’ Association, membership in the Elks Lodge of San Pedro, and service as a Division Captain of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Additionally, he participated in community activities through the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club and the Portuguese Bend Beach Club.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, their children Julie and David, and David’s family, including wife Jennie and children Tanner and Tristan. He also leaves behind nieces Diana Nardi and Susan Campbell, Diana’s children Sarah (married to Ryan Thomson) and Sean (married to Melissa), and their respective families. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert Campbell, just weeks prior to his passing.
A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on December 19, 2025, at St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, located at 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes. Friends and family are invited to honor and remember the extraordinary life of Gary E. Kinnett, whose contributions to his community and family will be cherished forever.
